Founded in 1984, The Local Group is a non-profit, educational organization active in supporting local schools and libraries. We provide volunteer speakers and telescopes for science nights and similar events. Membership is open to all. Meetings The club meets each month at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. Meetings are open to the public. Please consult the club calendar for details, or visit our home page for details on this month’s activities. Star Parties The Local Group conducts quarterly public star parties at the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park . In addition, club members regularly join with other southern California amateur astronomers at Mount Pinos on the Saturday nearest each new moon. Please consult the club calendar for details. Club Telescopes The club owns two telescopes. Please contact the club president, Tom Falconer, for information on borrowing these instruments. Volunteer Activities The club provides a cadre of volunteers to star parties for school groups and others interested in astronomy. Gatherings frequently attract sizable groups interested in seeing what the sky has to offer. Dues and Additional Benefits Dues are $24 per year and include a subscription to the club newsletter — What’s Up. Members also enjoy group discounts on subscriptions to Sky & Telescope.
