Presenting in July will be Dr. Chi Nguyen from Caltech talking about "Mapping the Universe with SPHEREx"
The NASA MIDEX mission "Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer" (SPHEREx) is an all-sky survey designed to study the physics of inflation, the history of galaxy formation, and the bionic ices in the Milky Way. Additionally, SPHEREx survey data will be publicly accessible, opening up the potential for many more science studies. SPHEREx is a joint effort of multiple US and South Korean institutions led by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Caltech. The satellite was successfully launched in early March 2025. The science survey commenced in early May 2025 and the first data release is scheduled for early July 2025. During the planned two-year mission, SPHEREx will map the sky four times in 102 near-infrared spectral bands between 0.75 and 5.0 um. In this talk, Dr. Nguyen will review SPHEREx science goals, highlight major contributions from local scientists and engineers, and showcase some early science data.
